Description

Charming hand-carved salamander netsuke, representing immortality and rebirth. Traditionally closures for garments, netsuke evolved into a form of sculpture from the 17th century. Over time these miniature sculptures became much sought after collectables for display on shelves or stands. Prominent figures in mythology, Salamanders were thought to have been born or created from fire by the ancient Greeks.
