Description
Painted glass hanging Christmas decoration in the form of a pair of boots, inspired by the baubles imported into Britain from Lauscha, Germany, in the 1870s, by which time the decorated Christmas tree had become a firm Victorian favourite. Boots have their own place in festive folklore. On the eve of St Nicholas’ Day, 6 December, children in Germany and the Low Countries traditionally left their boots or shoes by the door, to be filled overnight with nuts, fruit and small sweets, a custom that lives on in the Christmas stocking. Swinging gently from a branch, this quirky pair brings a merry note to the tree.
