Description
Pretty printed cotton dress, with pink roses on a purple ground, evoking the full blooms seen on a chintz panel from the 1830s, currently held in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The design captures these traditional chintz patterns, reflecting the intricate floral motifs and vibrant colours that are characteristic of this textile art form. Chintz was originally popular for bed covers, quilts and draperies in the 17th century. After Vasco da Gama successfully reached Calicut in India in 1498, the fabric became known in Europe. By the 19th century, chintz patterns were being applied to ceramics using the transfer process and were exported around the world by English manufacturers. In pull-on style with a cross-over front bodice, concealed popper and cap sleeves, finished with a plain pink binding. The skirt features a gathered waist, adjustable and detachable waist ties, a tiered panel at the hem and side pockets, all in an unlined, maxi length design.
