The great silk brocades of 16th-century Italy and Spain, woven on draw looms of extraordinary complexity to produce symmetrical pomegranate, artichoke and floral repeats in gold, crimson and deep green, were among the most costly luxury objects of the Renaissance world, worn by monarchs and merchants alike as a declaration of wealth, refinement and cultural sophistication.
