Victorian Rose Cotton Blouse

Purple printed cotton blouse evoking the full blooms of a chintz panel from the 1830s, now held in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The multicoloured floral pattern rests on a soft lilac ground. It has a relaxed fit with a Peter Pan collar and a mother-of-pearl button front fastening that runs the length of the piece. The short sleeves are finished with a small split and keyhole opening, and hem is gently curved for a polished finish. Large-scale rose patterns were a defining feature of 19th-century chintz textiles, admired for their richness and permanence of colour. Such designs were often displayed in domestic interiors as well as dress fabrics.
