Description
A poignant, illustrated collection of letters by Vincent van Gogh (1853-90) from his most creative period, living and working in Provence: capturing sunflowers and wheat fields; blossoming orchards; memorable portraits and starry nights. Based on a 1958 translation of the letters into English, the letters include the artist’s descriptions of the sights, people and landscapes surrounding him alongside sketches and notes about his paintings as he worked on them. These intimate letters record the creative energy on arrival in Arles, his troubled friendship with Gauguin, and declining health at Saint-Rémy. A moving post-script includes letters from van Gogh’s final months in Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris; including the unfinished final letter found on his body, addressed to his younger brother Theo.
