Spending an evening with a nefarious, bohemian and suspect crowd of novelist and thriller writers, all of whom are using assumed literary sobriquets for the evening, Macdonald isn’t quite sure he should have attended Afterall. But when ‘Samuel Pepys’ is found dead in the telephone room, the evening takes a bizarre and sinister turn and Macdonald must put his detective’s instincts to work. With so many layered identities, confusing names, false alibis and a few red herrings this mystery challenges the detective like no other. First published in 1937, one of over 60 novels by E.C.R. Lorac, the pen-name of acclaimed crime writer Edith Caroline Rivett (1894-1958), who also wrote under the name Carol Carnac.
