The British Library
An evocative, British mystery from the golden age of crime writing. When Mr Justice Ireton, known for his ruthless and strict adherence to upholding the law, is found holding a gun beside the murdered body of his daughter’s fiancé, Morrell; Ireton’s quiet holiday at his seaside Bungalow in Devon begins to unravel. The case appears to be simple, all the more so when it is made know that Ireton had sought to bribe Morrell to stay away from his daughter. But strange physical evidence and the unimpeachable legal character of the suspect raise doubts for Dr Gideon Fell, an old friend of Ireton. What appeared deceptively simple becomes increasing complex in a twisting and thought-provoking tale that will keep you guessing. First published in 1942, a mystery by prolific author John Dickson Carr (1906-77). Born in Pennsylvania, USA he lived in England and developed a ‘British’ style of writing which saw him become hugely popular. He was one of only two Americans admitted to the prestigious Detection Club of mystery writers.
