Athelstan Digby is looking after a bookshop in Keldstone when three suspicious characters each enquire after a copy of John Bunyan’s ‘The Life and Death of Mr Badman’. His interest piqued, when an unlikely copy suddenly appears in a bundle of books and then, just as suddenly, is stolen, Digby – calling on the help also of his nephew Jim - begins to investigate: what is the significance of this book and why would it occasion a case of antiquarian theft? But what begins as a perplexing case of book pinching soon descends into a murky case of murder with greater dangers to unravel in discovering the truth. First published in 1934 in a limited run this twisting tale is now hard to find. Written by William Fryer Harvey (1887–1937), best known for his supernatural short stories.
