Description
Discover the timeless entertainment of ‘ombromanie’, or ‘shadowgraphy’, with instructions to create 75 hand-shadow creatures. Graded by difficulty, learn to cast shadows: from a single-hand swallow, duck and greyhound; to two-handed jellyfish, turkey, wolf and camel shapes. Requiring only your hands, a strong light and some practice this parlour entertainment fascinates young and old alike. Originally performed by candlelight, the French performance artist Félicien Trewey (1848-1928) was a noted master of the artform, with performances of animals and people performed to adoring theatre audiences. Follow in Trewey’s footsteps for your own show: introductory chapters explain the basic set-up to cast shadows, hand and finger exercises to practice and basic shapes to master. Then perfect the animals, each with descriptive instruction and outline diagrams showing hand and finger positions. Ideal rainy day, travel-friendly or screen-free family fun.
