Description
Victoria & Albert Museum
An evocative collection of British views from over 50 artists, drawn from the Museum’s ‘Recording Britain’ archive. Initiated by Sir Kenneth Clark and funded by the Pilgrim Trust at the start of the Second World War, the documentary project captured over 1500 images. Forming a rich visual record of Britain's buildings, landscapes and ways of life and livelihood – with a focus on, in particular, where these were changing or threatened. This selection presents a beguiling time capsule with a true sense of place. Includes the work of John Piper, Michael Rothenstein, Stanley Badmin, Olive Cook, Barbara Jones, Kenneth Rowntree, and more. Richly illustrated with reproductions of paintings, drawings, etchings and photographs.
