Description
The British Library
An evocative novel from a curated series by popular women writers, republished by the Library to bring once popular and bestselling tales to a new audience; each with an eclectic mix of heroines reflecting the changing lives of women across the 20th century.

O, The Brave Music: a bittersweet story of childhood, growing up and friendship narrated by Ruan, who is looking back on her life. From the strict regime of her non-conformist-Minister father, to her mother’s ancestral home under her uncle’s tutelage, and life lived high in the moors where she enjoys freedom and enduring friendship.

Originally published in 1943, it is the first novel by Dorothy Evelyn Smith (1893-1969) who described writing during the Second World War ‘on the end of the kitchen table with bombs falling around the house’.
