Staying with his friends, the Hoggetts, in High Gimmerdale, he becomes drawn into assisting with solving a local case of sheep-stealing. But when the theft of livestock turns to arson, death and dark disorder soon follows and Macdonald must pit his wits as a detective to track down the criminals who have brought darkness to the peaceful rural community. First published in 1953, the author Edith Caroline Rivett (1894-1958) - writing with one of her pen-names as E.C.R. Lorac – drew upon her own experience of living in Lunsdale for the classic rural mystery.
