Description
The father of all field guides, ‘Bewick’s British Birds’ is a concise edition of Thomas Bewick’s (1753-1828) landmark ‘The History of British Birds’, published in two volumes in 1797 and 1804. This edition is based upon the 1826 editions of Bewick’s ‘Land Birds’ and ‘Water Birds’, the last that were published in the naturalist’s lifetime. The work illustrates and describes 184 birds: from the puffin and little Auk to garden and songbirds, eagles and long-eared owls. Reproducing Bewick’s original black-and-white woodcut illustrations and his ‘tail pieces’, plus the keenly observed narrative vignettes describing each species. Rarely produced and, arguably, never bettered, this is a book any bird lover will treasure.
