Description
Swan and iris umbrella designed in dark teal, cream and beige, based on one of Walter Crane's (1845–1915) earliest wallpaper designs, 'Swan, Rush and Iris', 1875, now held by the Victoria and Albert Museum. Crane was a leading figure of the Arts and Crafts movement and a close associate of William Morris, celebrated for wallpapers and illustrations that combined flowing, naturalistic form with clean, decorative line. The bold black outlines and solid blocks of colour in this early design suggest his close study of Greek vase painting, a classical influence he returned to throughout his career. In nylon with a steel frame and matching umbrella sleeve, opening and closing automatically at the touch of a button and coated with UV protection, it makes a stylish and practical gift for any admirer of Arts and Crafts design.
