Van Gogh Irises Shawl

Striking multicoloured shawl based on Vincent van Gogh's (1853–1890) 'Irises', 1889, a masterpiece of Post-Impressionism now held by the J. Paul Getty Museum. Painted in the garden of the asylum at Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy, where van Gogh had voluntarily admitted himself following his breakdown in Arles, 'Irises' was among the first works he completed there, its vibrant blue-violet flowers rendered with the dynamic, expressive brushwork that defines his mature style. The painting also reflects van Gogh's deep admiration for Japanese woodblock prints, whose bold outlines and flattened perspective he had studied closely and absorbed into his own visual language.
