Description
Red printed silk scarf inspired by an embroidered panel from a petticoat dated to c.1610–20. Decorated with honeysuckle, pinks, lilies, roses and, thistles, the piece was once thought to have been made by Mary Queen of Scots for Queen Elizabeth I, but the style of embroidery reflects a later date. The rich red colour of the original is probably from cochineal, an expensive dye made from crushed cactus beetles imported from Mexico. This silk scarf is elegantly finished with hand-rolled hems.

Made exclusively for Museum Selection.
