Description
Jacquard-woven rose paisley shawl reflecting the 19th-century fashion for paisley designs. The pattern itself is named after the Scottish weaving town of Paisley, which adapted Indian motifs to create this highly coveted fabric. The shawl features tones of pink, silver grey, and cream, finished with elegant tassels. Paisley motifs originated in Persian and Indian textiles and became a hallmark of British fashion in the 19th century. The intricate teardrop shape, known as ‘boteh’, symbolised fertility and eternity in its Eastern origins. By the mid-1800s, paisley decorated shawls, dresses, and accessories, embraced by tastemakers including Queen Victoria.
