Meiji Tree of Life Scarf

Tree of life scarf printed with a design drawing on motifs from a nineteenth-century Japanese Tree of Life embroidery held in the Museum's collection, created during the Meiji era (1868–1912), a period of rapid modernisation in Japan that nonetheless saw traditional embroidery and textile arts flourish and reach new heights of technical skill. In a cotton and modal blend with multi-floral motifs on a black ground, finished with a stitched hem, the design paler on the reverse.
