Description
William Morris GalleryDark blue floral silk scarf based on a detail of a tapestry seat cover by May Morris (1862-1938), currently held in the gallery collection. The cover was a gift to Amy Carruthers Tozer, daughter of William Carruthers, a friend of William Morris who accompanied him on his cruise to Spitsbergen in 1896 , and it embodies May Morris's characteristic gifts as a designer: the flowing stems, carefully observed flowers and sensitivity to colour harmony that distinguished her work from the more formulaic productions of the period. Designed with hand-rolled hems. A beautiful and wearable gift for any admirer of May Morris or the Arts and Crafts movement she did so much to define. Design will be paler on the reverse.
