Hiroshige Iris Silk Scarf

Bold design printed on habotai silk reproducing a detail from Horikiri Iris Garden, published in 1857 as part of Utagawa Hiroshige's (1797-1858) One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, one of the masterworks of the ukiyo-e woodblock print tradition, whose bold compositions, flat areas of colour and close engagement with the natural world exerted a transformative influence on Western art from the 1860s onwards, inspiring the Impressionists and giving rise to the craze for Japonisme that reshaped European design. On a light blue ground with hand-rolled hems; the design will be paler on the reverse. A striking scarf with the clarity, colour and elegance of Japanese woodblock print design.
