Description
Cream hand-knitted woollen hat, reflecting the rise in popularity of decorative knitting during the nineteenth century, when knitting patterns moved beyond purely practical garments into fashionable, ornamental designs for the home and wardrobe alike. The Scottish knitwear designer Jane Gaugain (1810–1860) played a pivotal role in this shift, publishing 'The Lady's Assistant for Executing Useful and Fancy Designs in Knitting' in 1840, one of the earliest books to present knitting patterns in a standardised, repeatable format. Finished with a decorative flower trim and a polyester fleece lining, this hat brings heritage design into a warm, everyday accessory.
