Description
The British Museum

An elegant tote bag reproducing an atmospheric landscape detail capturing a moonlit view of Japan’s Sumida River, glimpsed through cherry blossom branches, taken from a woodblock print by Japanese ukiyo-e printmaker Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-92). Part of a series of prints to illustrate the poignant folk tale ‘The Ancient Incident of Umewaka Beside the Sumida River’, which symbolised the fleeting nature of life and innocence. Printed on both sides, the bag includes shoulder-friendly straps and a useful interior pouch pocket. Created in a GOTS-certified Organic cotton canvas, the sturdy bag offers take-anywhere style combined with function. A refined and practical gift for lovers of Japanese art, this tote translates the quiet lyricism of ukiyo‑e printmaking into an everyday accessory.
