Celtic Knot Hairclip

Silver-tone costume hairclip enamelled in blue and green, evoking the stylised decorative knotwork used to decorate Celtic monuments and manuscripts from the 8th–10th centuries. The interlace patterns of Insular art, developed by monastic craftsmen working across Ireland, Scotland and Northumbria during the early medieval period, represent one of the most sophisticated achievements in the history of decorative design, their endlessly interweaving lines creating compositions of labyrinthine complexity that were understood to symbolise eternity, the interconnection of all living things and the mystery of the divine.
