Nightwear

A collection of nightdresses, robes and pyjamas, mainly in cotton and inspired by original pieces and decorative motifs from the past 1000 years. Chemises can be traced to the tunic-like garments worn in ancient cultures, by the Medieval period they had developed into an early form of underwear, ladies would simply sleep in their chemise. Nightgowns evolved from the 17th century, generally in cotton or linen and reflecting the fashion of the period. By the 19th century nightgowns for ladies of quality were sewn with pin tucks and frills, pulled thread work, crochet, lace and embroidery. The origin of pyjamas can be traced to at least the 17th century in South and West Asia. By the 18th century, British missionaries had adopted the style as sleepwear for men and by the early 20th century pyjamas had replaced nightshirts as usual sleepwear. Pyjamas were gradually adopted by ladies as daywear in the 1920s and 30s.
