Renaissance Portrait Jewellery Set

This striking shell pearl necklace with matching earrings echoes the one worn in a portrait of a young woman by the Florentine artist Domenico Ghirlandaio (1448 – 1494) from c.1490, now held in the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon. This rich necklace combines shell pearls with small crystal beads, gold-plated silver beads and T-bar clasp. Domenico Ghirlandaio was an Italian Renaissance painter born in Florence and was part of the so-called 'third generation' of the Florentine Renaissance, along with Verrocchio and Sandro Botticelli; there with many apprentices passing through Ghirlandaio's workshop notably Michelangelo. Ghirlandaio's particular talent lay in his ability to posit depictions of contemporary life and portraits of contemporary people within the context of religious narratives.  Necklace 20" long, earrings 1" long, posts.
