Solid hand-carved boxwood netsukes were traditionally toggle closures for garments that evolved into a unique form of miniature sculpture from the 17th century. The Pekinese, an ancient breed of toy dog, is also known as the Lion Dog, due to their resemblance to Chinese guardian lions.
