Description
From bestselling natural history author Peter Wohlleben, spellbinding science and thought-provoking insights that will change the way you think about the natural world.
The Hidden Life of Trees: a walk in the woods will be changed forever after reading this captivating exploration of forests and understanding woods as a social network. Once-thought to be largely passive, fascinating scientific discoveries explore the diverse and active connections now known to exist between trees. How trees develop in family groups, how they share food and how they communicate, even warning each other of dangers. It takes a forest to create a microclimate that nurtures trees; isolated trees have far shorter lives than those living connected together in forests.

Bought this at sale price. It's a great read - absolutely fascinating, especially with regard to 'communication' and the way individuals within tree 'communities' support one another. Also on the subject of the vast 'underground' and soil biota which are so important for healthy trees, woodland and us. Maybe we should think of trees as we do icebergs and take greater care with what lies beneath. This is a translation from the German, but it's very well done and manages to convey all you need of the magic of the author's beloved trees and the awe and responsibility Wohlleben feels - and thinks we should feel also.
