A wall calendar exploring the elegant customs and seasonal pastimes of Meiji-era beauties in art by acclaimed Japanese print maker Toyohara Chikanobu (1838-1912). A prolific artist, Chikanobu is known for capturing traditional Japanese themes in a time when much of Japanese culture was looking westward. Drawing on delicately coloured prints and seasonal views, now in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Includes ‘Moon Reflected in Water’, 1899, from his 'Setsugekka' (‘Snow, Moon and Flowers’) series inspired by a traditional Chinese poem; a view of courtiers enjoying the Hatsu-uma festival, 1894-94, from a stately series of prints capturing life in the ‘Chiyoda Inner Palace’; and ‘Snow in the Park’, 1894-96, from a series exploring Japanese customs, known as ‘Yamato fuzoku’. From ‘Evening Cherry Blossoms’, 1894-96, to ‘Poetry Contest’, 1894-96, the elegant images reflect flowers, festivals and customs across the twelve months of the year.
