Description
The Fitzwilliam Museum
Plum and cherry blossom are important motifs in Japanese art, echoing the ancient custom of ‘hanami’, or ‘flower viewing’. It is thought Japanese Emperor Saga (786-842) first popularised the celebration with poems and feasts beneath his Kyoto palace’s cherry trees. Reproducing woodblock prints by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) and Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865). Includes Hiroshige’s ‘Plum Estate at Kameido’, 1857 and 1858 views of Fuji.
