Ashmolean Museum
A sophisticated jigsaw puzzle for hours of happy puzzling. Piece together a refined scene of a Japanese garden, replete with beautiful details of peacocks, cranes, peonies, a blossoming tree and a birdcage hanging amidst the branches. Reproducing an exquisite, embroidered hanging, originally worked in coloured silk and gold thread on a sumptuous black silk background. Now in the collection of the Museum, this hanging is thought to have been made in Japan c.1870s-1930s. Filled with intricate details to unravel the hanging’s subject is also imbued with symbolic meaning: the peacock is considered a symbol of compassion, the crane is an emblem of happiness and peonies reflect good fortune and honour.
