Winter Woodblock Cards

The British Museum
Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints became popular in the West in the 1860s as trade links grew, inspiring a fashion for ‘Japonism’; the typical use of flattened perspective, blocks of solid colour and strength of line in Japanese art went on to inform the ‘New Artists’ of Art Nouveau and Impressionism, which sought a new approach to classical art. Reproducing mid-19th century woodblock prints by masters Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), Kawase Hasui (1883-1957); alongside images by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861), Utagawa Toyokuni (1769-1825), and Suzuki Harunobu (fl. c.1724-70).
