Thistles Silk Scarf

Glasgow Museums

Scarf based on an embroidered silk panel from a petticoat made c.1610-1620, decorated with honeysuckle, pinks, lilies, roses and, most notably, thistles. Historically said to have been made by Mary, Queen of Scots for Elizabeth I of England, but the style of embroidery is of a later date. The rich red colour of the original is probably from cochineal, an expensive dye made from crushed cactus beetles imported from Mexico.

Silk.
58" x 13".
Dry clean only.
