Storm Glass

The storm glass was widely used from the 1700s; attached to the ship's mast, the changing crystals forecast good weather and foreboding conditions at sea. The chemical formulation within was refined by Admiral Robert Fitzroy (1805-1865), who conducted a detailed study of the instrument and published observational guidelines.
