Set of 3 Bandy Papers Novels

Welcome reprints of author Donald Jack’s (1924-2003) ‘Bandy Papers’, blackly humorous tales drawing upon the author’s own RAF service from 1943-47. The novels take the form of ‘memoirs’ of his fictional anti-hero, the young Canadian First World War flying ace Bartholomew Bandy, mingling comedy with startling and moving observations of the horrors of war. The tales were originally published in the 1970s and were once a favourite of P.G. Wodehouse. Three Cheers for Me: set in 1916, the Royal Flying Corps’ newest recruit reveals a surprising aptitude for piloting Sopwith Camels and getting the girl but his greatest ability is to open his mouth and put his foot in it. That's Me in the Middle: newly-promoted in the Royal Flying Corps, a school speech on the shortcomings of Field Marshal Haig lands Bandy back in the trenches, this time on a bicycle. It's Me Again: ‘On the way back to the Front I ran over a general’… 1918 and Bandy’s high on success, low on charming the Top Brass-approach finds himself transferred to the Russian revolution: fighting Bolsheviks, meeting Trotsky and facing the firing squad.
