Named after a London railway station, the nation’s favourite bear, Paddington, was ‘born’ in 1956 when Michael Bond bought a small toy bear left on the shelves of a Selfridges store, for his wife. This inspired the first book of stories ‘A Bear Called Paddington’ in 1958, with illustrations by Peggy Fortnum. Reproducing once of her charming illustrations.
