Occasion Wear

A collection of occasion wear inspired by the elegant designs of the 19th and early 20th century in velvet, brocade and lace. The restrictive clothes of the early 19th century gave way to looser shapes at the turn of the century. Designers of the Aesthetic Movement such as E.W. Godwin favoured 'artistic' dress for women based on classical, medieval, Pre-Raphaelite and Renaissance clothing and during the 1910s designers such as Paul Poiret created dresses for an uncorseted figure. The 1920s saw the rise of the Flapper with raised hemlines and relaxed silhouettes reflecting this emancipated new woman. The fabrics of the decades reflected the artistic movements, Art Nouveau designers favoured fluid, asymmetrical patterns using stylised florals and feathers whilst in the 1920s designers adopted the bold geometric patterns of Art Deco.
