London in 3-D

From Sunday morning hustle and bustle in Petticoat Lane to views of Fleet Street, the rooftops across to St Paulís and the traffic on Westminster Bridge: 45 black and white stereoscopic views of 19th century London brought to life in 3-D. Offering fascinating details of Londonís past combined with the curio-fun of stereoscopy, which flourished as a popular Victorian parlour entertainment c.1850-1930. Drawing upon innovations in lenses and photography, the invention of stereoscopy coincided with the comprehension of the concepts of binocular vision in 1838 but was first demonstrated to a fascinated public at the Great Exhibition. After this, special cameras made stereoscopic cards, which feature two images set side-by-side. Seen through the viewer, the two photos merge to create a strikingly life-like 3-D image. It was only with the advent of radio and Ďtalkiesí that the fashion died away.

Hardback, 96 pages. Includes in-built stereoscopic lenses.
7 ľĒ square.
