Joseph Banks' Florilegium

2018 marks 250 years since Captain Cook’s first Voyage of the ‘Endeavour’, 1768-71. To mark the anniversary, the first full-colour printing from a selection of the original 18th century plates, reproducing over 147 botanical illustrations commissioned by Royal Society naturalist Joseph Banks (1743-1820) from the species found on the expedition. Accompanying Captain Cook, Joseph Banks collected exotic flora from Madeira, Brazil, Tierra del Fuego, the Society Islands, New Zealand, Australia and Java; bringing back over 1300 unknown species. Upon his return Banks commissioned over 700 engravings, 1772-84, known as ‘Banks’ Florilegium’; considered to be some of the most precise and exquisite examples of botanical illustrations ever created. Never published in his lifetime, the plates have rarely been seen outside expert circles. The current, rare selection provides an opportunity to glory in the fine details of plants such as Bougainvillea, passionflower and blue morning glory, which have since become established in parts of Europe, but also Metrosideros (known as the New Zealand Christmas tree), golden orchid, tangle fern, yellow teak, mango pine and many other still-exotic wonders. Each plate is accompanied by expert commentary plus essays setting the work and modern printing within historical context.

Hardback, 320 pages, 162 colour and 11 black and white illustrations.
