Impressionism

Ideas inspired by the works of the great Impressionist masters. Impressionism was a 19th-century art movement that originated with a group of Paris-based artists whose came to prominence during the 1870s and 1880s. Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, and Frédéric Bazille shared an interest in painting landscape and contemporary life rather than historical or mythological scenes. By painting in sunlight directly from nature, and making bold use of the vivid synthetic pigments that had become available, they began to develop a lighter and brighter style. Originally a term of derision by an art critic, the term Impressionist quickly gained favour with the public. It was also accepted by the growing group of artists, even though they were a diverse group including, Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Sisley, Cézanne, Morisot and Degas.
