How Her Majesty Will Celebrate Her 90th Birthday

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will celebrate her 90th birthday on the 21st April. A host of celebrations will be held throughout April, May and June to mark this milestone event.

Her actual birthday will be spent at Windsor Castle. On 20th April she will visit the Royal Mail Windsor delivery office, as the date marks the 500th anniversary of the postal service. A new bandstand at Windsor's Alexandra Gardens will also be opened on the day.

On 21st April, she will be unveiling a plaque at the start of a four-mile Queen’s Walkway at the foot of Castle Hill. The walkway connects 63 points of interest in the town, symbolising the Queen’s achievement in becoming our longest-reigning monarch, in 2015 after more than 63 years.

Following tradition, there will be a walkabout where the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will greet members of the public. In the evening they will be joined by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall to light the first of a of chain over 1,000 beacons across the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, and UK overseas territories.

One of the main celebrations takes place from 12th May to 15th May. Similar to the celebrations for the Diamond Jubilee, there will be a 90-minute performance each night involving over 900 horses and more than 1500 riders. The Queen herself will be attending on the final evening.

10th June  is also the Duke of Edinburgh’s 95th birthday. While there will not be any public celebration of the date, he and the Queen will attend a Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral with a congregation of invited guests.

The annual Trooping the Colour will be held on Saturday, 11th June. This is the official celebration of the Queen’s birthday and is also known as The Queen’s Birthday Parade. The ceremony, which has has been a tradition since the 17th century, is performed by the regiment of the British and Commonwealth armies and takes place on Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall.

The last even planned for Her Majesty's birthday is the Patron's Lunch on Sunday 12th June. The Mall in London will be transformed into a giant street party with 10,000 guests invited to a picnic lunch with street performers to entertain. Many areas across the UK will hold their own street parties to join in with the celebrations.
