China & Glass

A collection of fine bone china, porcelain, lead crystal and glass, both practical and decorative, inspired by over 500 years of decorative art. The ancient Romans created refined glass, decorated with trailing strands and fused patterns, their techniques were revived during the Renaissance, notably on the island of Murano, creating colourful and intricate pieces. During later centuries clear glass was perfected and craftsmen used engraving and sandblasting techniques as decoration for glasses, bowls, pitchers and decanters. At the turn of the century L.C. Tiffany created lustrous glass in an Art Nouveau style using a technique he termed 'favrile'. Initially emulating Chinese imported designs the British potteries created their own distinctive styles during the 18th and 19th centuries, from Creamware to the colourful designs of the Staffordshire potteries and the refined elegance of Wedgwood. During the early 20th a new style of ceramics was born, Clarice Cliff created boldly conceived vases, teapots, figurines, bowls and jugs reflecting the forms and motifs of the Art deco movement.
