Camping on the Wye

A delightful facsimile from 1892, complete with the original watercolours which appear throughout the text: the illustrated notebook kept by S.K. Baker, recounting the adventures of himself and 3 University chums as they descend the River Wye in a randan rowing skiff. Charming and funny: escapades include a run-in with a mad bull at Whitney, hitting rocks and getting grounded, a picnic in the ruins of Goodrich Castle’s Banqueting Hall, suffering the wrath of an angry farmer near Tintern, and salmon fishing near Chepstow. The watercolours also capture the views, changing river scenery and the history of the places along the way. Recalling the legendary ‘Three Men in a Boat’, with which the notebooks are entirely contemporaneous, although the protagonists are younger and, possibly, naughtier. The sister volume to the 1889 diary ‘A Week on the Broads’. Facsimile illustrated pages followed by type-set text.

Hardback, 158 pages, colour illustrations throughout.
8½” x 6¼”.
