Arts and Crafts

Furnishings, accessories and gifts reflecting the Arts and Crafts movement. The Arts and Crafts movement was an international movement in the decorative and fine arts that began in Britain and flourished in Europe and North America between 1880 and 1910, emerging in Japan in the 1920s. The movement was based upon upholding or reviving traditional craftsmanship, it opposed industrialisation and favoured using simple forms. It took inspirations from medieval, romantic, and folk styles of decoration and the ideas of architect Augustus Pugin (181252), writer John Ruskin (18191900), and the artist William Morris (183496), arguably the father of the movement. Morris was a prolific designer working across textiles, print, stained glass and interiors, many of which can be viewed in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Morris Gallery.
