An Artist's War

Told in letters between Morris and Alice Meredith Williams, from June 1916 to March 1919, and illustrated throughout with Morris Meredith Williamsí sketches: an intensely personal record of the First World War. Never without a sketchbook and pencils in his pocket, Meredith Williams drew at every opportunity, producing an extraordinary record of his surroundings; from the touching and heartfelt to brutal, stark images of the loss of war. Life in the trenches of the Western Front; his mapping, reconnaissance and camouflage work; and then, after the peace, his role as one of a handful of artists retained to make paintings for the official record. After the war some of the sketches inspired a series of war memorials, most notably for the Scottish National War Memorial.

Hardback, 268 pages, 121 black and white/sepia and 80 colour illustrations.
