Aberffraw Bara Brith Biscuits

Said to be Britain's oldest biscuit, it is thought that Welsh pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela in the 13th century started to press shortbread into scallop shell shapes as a remembrance of their journey. These were known locally in Wales as 'Teisen Berffro', which means 'Aberffraw cake'. Bara Brith: named for the famous Welsh staple - a rich, fruit loaf - all-butter shortbread with raisins, spices and tea.

The biscuits were large, spicy, and pleasant. Unfortunately, three of the nine biscuits had been broken, and the packaging damaged, in the examination process. They were not intended as a gift so this did not matter too much.
