A Month at the Front

The British Library

Discovered at the bottom of a box donated to the Library, a keenly observed, poignant and moving account of life on the Western Front in July 1917. Kept by a now - unknown solider of the 12th East Surrey Regiment, humour and pathos jostle amidst scenes from an impossible daily life: dodging shells to fetch meals from the rations cart; his regiment lost on a march, straying perilously near enemy lines; signing to a captured German soldier living in his trench; catching sleep in snatches of 10 or 15 minutes; and always, the endless mud. Gradually, he describes how one by one, his fellow soldiers East Surreys fall until he is left with just 3 of his mates. Narrowly escaping death the narrative ends abruptly, as he is taken prisoner by the Enemy.
