20 Birds & Blossom Cards

Expressive cards, representing - and reflecting European interpretations of - the Japanese 'kacho-e' tradition, in which depictions of birds and flowers express transcience with elegant simplicity. Includes 'Two Swallows on a cherry blossom branch', c.1920 by kacho-e master Ohara Koson (1877-1945) and 'Garden Warblers among rose trees by moonlight' by Nakayama Sugakudo (fl. 1850-61). The opening up of Japan to trade with the West in the mid-19th century created a fashion for Japanese prints in European artistic circles. The Japanese print-style and motifs are interpreted here in an illustration by L. Hohlwein for 'Jugend' magazine in 1903 and a Silver Studio textile c.1938.
